Annie voluntarily became my second mother during my college years, and beyond, starting in 1980. Annie's son, Eric, was one of my college roommates, along with Larry Gomez. We three shared one small room and have remained close friends for the past 44 years. Very rare. Annie and her husband Eric Sr., along with their daughter Vivian, did so many wonderful and loving things for me over the years. For example, Annie took me to the Hauppaug DMV to change my Illinois driver's license to a New York State license, so I could save money as an "in-state" student on my college tuition and, allowed me to use the Hawk address until I graduated in 1984. The Hawks Invited me to all family holiday gatherings, and extended weekends, whenever I could not travel to Illinois. Also, I would spend a few weeks in the summer with the Hawk's during my college years. Very much enjoying their company as well as Annie's father's company (Pop). He was still alive in the early 80's. He reminded me so much of my parents who were also born in Italy. So I had a deep connection with Annie since we were both first-generation Americans. A lot in common to share. Once, Annie and Eric Sr., took me, Eric Jr. and his girlfriend at the time (now his wife Yuen) to visit Lancaster and Birdsboro, PA (where Annie once lived). Loved that trip! So much fun. The Hawks also periodically invited me to use their home as a retreat when things were not going so well in my career and, nurtured me through some episodes of deep depression. Annie's street-wise wisdom, and Eric Sr's. book-knowledge and no-nonsense approach to things was a great comfort to me - a perfect combination. Annie's humor was infectious. She could tell a funny story better than most comedians and, she could cook up a storm like nobody's business. Hundreds of amazing, unforgettable, meals and extraordinary pies! Oh, those delicious pies! To this day, my all-time-favorite Thanksgiving was 1980 at the Hawks home - no holiday meal or company has ever come close to that year, nor were the laughs ever better. The day after Thanksgiving, we journeyed to Annie sister's home (Connie & Leno). Annie and her sisters, Tina, Margie and Connie could not have been more welcoming, nor funnier. It was my first time meeting the extended family. No one could tell stories like them. It was truly magical. I'll never forget it. It was like a great theatrical experience. Most of all, it was Annie's friendship, her humor, the laughter we shared, her loyalty over the years, her street-wise wisdom, and her love and support of me and my partner Luis of 27 years that I will miss. Prior to her passing, Annie had not been herself for the past few years and that was extremely difficult to watch. However, she was extremely well cared for by her family. I had the great privilege of knowing Annie when she was at the top of her game and, my heart will be forever filled with gratitude for that. I consider myself extremely fortunate to be a part of the Hawk family. I grieve deeply with my dear friend (and chosen brother) Eric, as we have both lost a loving mother, a remarkable friend, and an extraordinary human being. Thank you Annie, you will be greatly missed. Rest in peace.
